2019 racing kicks off

Northstar Yamaha Racing podium finishes both on & off-road racing on the weekend.

The weekend of February 16/17 saw both Qld Road & Off Road Racing seasons kick off and Northstar Yamaha Racing riders featured at both events.

Round one of the Qld 'Sunshine State MX' Series was held at Coolum Pines MX track over the weekend.

Northstar Yamaha MX2 rider Ricky Latimer finished 3rd overall after 7-3-2 finishing positions in the 3x15 minute moto format.
The podium was an all Yamaha affair on the new 2019 YZ250F with Jay Wilson (Yamalube Yamaha Racing) taking the round win going 1-1-1 and Aaron Tanti (Serco Yamaha) finishing second with 2-2-4.

My speed was good all day, unfortunately I hit a back wheel of another rider first lap of moto 1 and went down which put me in last place, I managed to work my way up to 7th in the short moto time we had. Second moto I got a 8th place start and made my way up to 3rd, finishing behind Jay Wilson and Aaron Tanti. Third moto I got a 5th place start and was up to 3rd by halfway around the first lap behind Wilson and Tanti. Towards the end of race I was in 2nd behind Jay Wilson and stayed on his rear wheel to the finish line. I'm pretty stoked to be running with these guys and to finish third overall for the day.

Round one of the Qld Road Racing Championships was held at Morgan Park with a 4 race format over 2 days.

Northstar Yamaha business owner Michael Edwards raced his YZF-R1M to 2nd overall in the premiere F1 (Superbike) class.
This year sees a very strong local field competing in the hotly contested class, with five riders on five different brands of bikes vying for the win.
1st - Mitchell Paynter (Suzuki GSX-R1000) went 1-1-1-1
2nd - Michael Edwards (Northstar Yamaha YZF-R1M) finished 2-5-3-2
3rd - Dean Hasler (BMW S1000RR) 4-2-2-5
4th - Ben Lowe (Kawasaki ZX-10R) 5-3-4-3
5th - Brian Houghton (Honda CBR1000RR SP) 3-4-5-4
With so many position changes amongst these 5 riders, the racing was fast, furious and very entertaining.

Michael also raced his newly revised 1999 YZF-R1 in the period racing class 'Pre2k F1' (pre year 2000 Superbikes), which has also seen a great deal of growth over the last few years and some very impressive looking motorcycles lining up on the grid.
This round saw an epic battle between 2018 Qld Pre2K F1 Champ Ben Lowe (1999 R1) vs 2017 class Champ Michael Edwards (Northstar Yamaha R1) - Ben took all four wins going 1-1-1-1, with enthralling races between the two that saw the lead change multiple times throughout each race. There was hardly more than a couple of tenths between them each race with the races so exciting that Commentator Scotty Mackellar was running out of breath trying to keep up with calling the on-track action. Michael Edwards finished 2nd with 2-2-2-2 results and Jason Martin (Yamaha YZF/FZR1000) finished third for the weekend with 3-3-4-3. Michaels son Ash Edwardsrounded out the weekend in 5th place on his 1999 Northstar Yamaha R1.

What an awesome weekends racing with a great bunch of guys! These meetings are always so well run by The Motorcycle Sportsmen of QLD
Both bikes have seen some substantial changes since we last raced, this was our first hit-out to gauge where we're at. The old bike (1999 R1) wasn't ridden much last year and only saw the track Friday (15th Feb) for the first time in 9 months. Unfortunately a broken steering dampener bolt slowed our charge in race one and Ben got the better of lapped traffic in the longer 10 lap race three.
In races two & four the gap between us at the finish line was only a couple of tenths - I couldn't make a pass stick, every time I passed Ben he came straight back at me!
I'm happy to have set the fastest lap time for the class this weekend (new pb) & really enjoyed riding the old bike again.
In saying that, nothing beats the mind blowing power/handling/exhilaration of racing the newer R1M. Morgan Park Raceway is a very physically demanding track, so with the five of us swapping positions & paint throughout the races I was pretty worn out mentally by the end of weekend. We're heading in the right direction in setup and my fitness is at another level this year, I just need to work on my starts to make the races easier to control.
